Teater Nu
GENERAL INFO and CORE ACTIVITIES
Teater Nu’s activities are divided into three organizational pillars – we create our own original works for the stage, we run an art venue for contemporary art and we work on projects and initiatives that strengthen and develop these two fields.
Performing arts – Teater Nu creates performing art works that are born out of philosophical questions. We work with non conventional theatre spaces, where the choice of venue is a part of the artistic work in itself. We have an in-house director and playwright, Matilda Klamas. The ensemble changes depending on the work.
Contemporary art – Teater Nu runs Boy konsthall, a space for contemporary art in Bollebygd, Sweden, since 2017. Here we let the artworks challenge, touch and engage us, to create movements that broaden our horizons. Despite its small size, Boy konsthall has high artistic ambitions, and creates an open door between the small community of Bollebygd and the contemporary national and international art scene. At Boy konsthall we produce 6-7 exhibitions per year, which are open to visitors approximately 110 days per year.
Projects – Teater Nu works in projects that strengthen and develop the performing arts and contemporary art. For example artist exchanges, network development and collaboration, such as the current TestArt (2024-2026) or skills development, such as Trainart (2019-2022).
MY PREFERRED ARTISTIC RESEARCH WOULD BE…
Above all, I want to meet other artists and create a piece together. I am interested in cross-artistic working methods, which for this project may involve sound-work-elements (like sound-walks), immersive elements, among other things. As a playwright, I also want to explore how text can be its own role on stage, not only that the text becomes embodied, but can the text be a body on stage? In my artistic practice I usually both write and direct. I usually start from another work, a text work such as a book, with which I then have a writing dialogue and create a new independent work, a bit like a palimpsest (not adaptations). Most recently, I did a performance where I was inspired by Hannah Arendt’s book The Human Condition, Vita activa and created a monologue. The performance is a philosophical spy drama that also involves object theater (not puppets, objects that come alive). I have also worked with workshops where I had fragments of text that I and the actors have worked with and then created a work based on it. In this project I am still interested in exploring my artistic practice as a director and playwright.
I’M LOOKING FOR…
Above all, I need to meet other skills such as performer, actors and dancers in order to create a work. I need a stage room, but also a place where there is quiet for writing. Being able to work undisturbed is important, that it is not a place where a lot of other things happen during the time when we work artistically.
MY SPACE CAN OFFER…
A permissive, friendly and focused residency.
We manage two different spaces – Scen 46 in Gothenburg and Boy konsthall in Bollebygd, both located in the western region of Sweden.
Scen 46 – We are part of the performing arts cluster Scen 46, located next to Gothenburg’s harbor inlet and the Stena Line ferry terminal. This is Teater Nu’s fixed point in Gothenburg. The space is a bit rough but open, kind and encouraging to artistic explorations. From one side of the building you can see the port inlet, and from the other you are just a few steps away from the city with restaurants, bars and other culture venues in walking distance. Scen 46 is run through the cluster association Teaterföreningen Kajskjul46. The venue consists of a black box with suspended floor and dance mat equipped with sound and lighting equipment, mirror hall with suspended floor and dance mat for rehearsals, small studio (music), workshop, storage room, office, kitchen and toilet. Active groups at Scen46 right now are Bardo Scenkollektiv, Gröten, Kiriaka, No Deadline, Rymdstationen stage art, Revet scenkonst, Slip of the Lip, Teater Nu and Teater Smuts.
Boy konsthall – Our art venue is located in the centre of the small municipality Bollebygd, right by the town square. The venue has big windows facing the street and the corridor of the small (very small) mall that it is a part of. Facing Boy konsthall is a hairdresser, and a few steps away there is a clothing store and a restaurant. The space is about 47 square meters with a ceiling height of 3 meters. It has a small cooking area, brush cleaning station and a small toilet. Since Boy konsthall is located in this small town (Bollebygd has about 9700 inhabitants, and are located in between the two bigger cities Gothenburg and Borås) we actively work to make the art more accessible, and to make the step into the art space easier. Here, we talk about the art in an accessible way, without belittling the work itself. We want to encourage more people to develop a love for the arts, because we really think it makes life so much better.
MY SPACE FITS BEST…
Artists that have clear communication and who’s not afraid to ask for what they need;
Artists who are self-reliant;
Artists active in the contemporary performing arts field or the contemporary arts fields, who’s main target group is an adult audience;
Artists interested in discussions – about art, philosophy, working conditions, politics, artistic processes.
FOR MY ORGANIZATION, WORKING INTERNATIONALLY MEANS…
Exploration.
